My Old Kentucky Home

Hunting and trapping were common occupations when my home was built in Kentucky in the 1830s.  The house, in fact, was built for the nephew of one of Kentucky’s most noted hunters, Daniel Boone. But hunting and trapping INSIDE my historic home wasn’t common…. until today.

My amazing friend, Melinda, has been checking on my Kentucky home while it sits alone, waiting to find it’s new ‘forever’ owner.  Until I return she is watering the plants, checking the heat, and keeping my freezer stocked with ice cream.

But last week my patio furniture was damaged by high winds and she had quite a surprise when she went into the cellar to store the umbrella.

She found evidence of an intruder (I did have 2 mice during my 10 years of residence there, and occasional chimney swifts in the living room fireplace, but nothing else).

I can’t imagine her surprise when she discovered “Pearl”  had moved in.  Melinda bravely hunted and trapped her and released “Pearl” on her Bourbon County farm in a more appropriate environment .

This is the email I received from Melinda, when I first learned I had a new tenant…

<sprtiz of perfume. Into the back of the truck she went, and I took her to where the wild things are.  I released her at the base of a huge, I mean HUGE, bur oak that had snapped halfway up its massive trunk.  It’s a jungle jim like no other.  After shake, shake, shaking her out of the cage she scurried out onto the fallen limbs and found the main branch to the enormous trunk in minutes. Mother Nature blessed Paris with sunny 55 degree weather for her December 9th move,  and later in the day she blessed Pearl with a shower.  I’m sure you can figure out where this story is going.  Pearl and Pete have surely hooked up by now.  Pete was probably due for a shower too.  And, in no time ……..ah springtime……… I will have a new string of pearls.>>
